Carly Simon Love Songs: Anticipation, Legend in Your Own Time, Mockingbird & You’re So Vain

These days love letters have been reduced to sexting. Sure, those little ciphered messages have their place, but can you imagine someone who writes love songs for you? Love songs recorded for the masses?

Perhaps the most notable songwriters to do this was Carly Simon, who wrote songs about and with equally high-profile lovers that included Cat Stevens (AKA Yusuf Islam) and James Taylor.

If I were a man, I couldn’t think of a bigger thrill than to have a woman like Simon write a song for me.

Not much is documented about the romance between the earthy and classically sexy Simon and Stevens back in 1970, but Simon’s Anticipation, one of the most sweetest and heartfelt love songs in my book, was supposedly written while she was waiting to go on a first date with Stevens.

Anticipation

We can never know about the days to come
But we think about them anyway, yay
And I wonder if I’m really with you now
Or just chasin’ after some finer day

Anticipation, anticipation
Is makin’ me late
Is keepin’ me waitin’

And I tell you how easy it feels to be with you
And how right your arms feel around me
But I, I rehearsed those lines just late last night
When I was thinkin’ about how right tonight might be

Anticipation, anticipation
Is makin’ me late
Is keepin’ me waitin’

And tomorrow we might not be together
I’m no prophet and I don’t know nature’s ways
So I’ll try and see into your eyes right now
And stay right here ’cause these are the good old days

(These are the good old days)
And stay right here ’cause these are the good old days
(These are the good old days)
(These are the good old days)
(These are the good old days)
(These are…..the good old days)
And just to think how many people think the song was written for a Heinz Ketchup commercial.

Simon also wrote Legend in Your Own Time for Stevens.

Legend in Your Own Time

Well I have known you
Since you were a small boy
And your mama used to say
“My boy is gonna grow up and be
Some kind of leader some day”

Then you’d turn on the radio
And sing with the singer in the band
Your mama would say to you
“This isn’t exactly what we had planned”

But you’re a legend in your own time
A hero in the footlights
Playing tunes to fit your rhyme
But a legend’s only a lonely boy
When he goes home alone.

And though I know you
Still have the heart of that small boy
Well, you lend it out far too much
And no one woman loving you
Can ever feel that she’s been really touched.

Then you turn on the radio
And sing with the singer in the band
Think kind of sadly to yourself
This isn’t exactly what you had planned.

But you’re a legend in your own time
A hero in the footlights
Playing tunes to fit your rhyme
But a legend’s only a lonely boy
When he goes home alone.

Well a legend’s only a lonely boy
When he goes home alone.
In turn, Stevens wrote Sweet Scarlet for Simon.

Simon eventually went on to marry James Taylor, who’s one of popular music’s most iconic singer-songwriters in his own right. Aside from singing backup on a number of songs he recorded, both of them recorded Mockingbird together in 1973.

However, Simon’s top hit wasn’t exactly a love song, but more of a “fuck you” thought to be written about Warren Beatty … or possibly Mick Jagger … in some of the most sweetly stabbing verses ever recorded. We’ll never know who she wrote about. Simon’s never said, but she’s never denied that it was written for someone in particular.

You’re So Vain

You walked into the party
Like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror
As you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they’d be your partner
They’d be your partner, and

You’re so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You’re so vain
I’ll bet you think this song is about you
Don’t you? Don’t you?

You had me several years ago
When I was still quite naive
Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me
I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and

You’re so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You’re so vain
I’ll bet you think this song is about you
Don’t you? Don’t you?

I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and

You’re so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You’re so vain
I’ll bet you think this song is about you
Don’t you? Don’t you?

Well, I hear you went up to Saratoga
And your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well, you’re where you should be all the time
And when you’re not, you’re with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and

You’re so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You’re so vain
I’ll bet you think this song is about you
Don’t you? Don’t you?

If I were a man, I’m not sure if this is the legacy I’d want left behind about me.
